Аннотация:Phytomix-40 (PhM-40) was prepared by extracting a mixture of forty medical herbs (Rhodiola r. L; Juniperus c. L.; Helichrysum a. L.; Viburnum o.L. etc.). Experiments on mice have shown that PhM-40 has extremely low toxicity, anti-metastatic, immunomodulatory, antiparkinsonian and antioxidant activities. In this study PhM-40 was examined for its immunomodulatory effects in humans with age immunodeficiency. PhM-40 was taken orally by 15 men of 70-80 years old at dose of 15 ml 3 times a day during one month. Immune cell subpopulations were analyzed by quantifying the expression of markers using flow cytometric study. PhM-40 resulted in an increase in the percentage of peripheral blood lymphoid cells expressing surface markers for T-cells (CD3; p<0,05), T-helper cells (CD4; p<0,05), IL-2 receptors (CD25; p<0,05), and in a decrease of cells, expressing markers for T-suppressors (CD8; p<0,05) and ICAM-1 adhesive molecules (CD54; p<0,001). Elevated percentages of cells expressing surface markers for B-cells (CD20; p<0,01), macrophages and natural killers (CDllb; p<0,05 and CD16; p<0,05) were also observed in men after treatment. The raised percentage of the cells expressing adhesive molecule ICAM-3 correlated with upregulated apoptosis marker Fas/APO-1 antigen expression (CD95). As a result the immune parameters in old men became close to normal level in humans of 40-50 years old. The data suggest that PhM-40 has immunomodulatory properties, producing major changes in immune cellular marker expression, and can provide differentiation effect on lymphocytes in vivo in old men.
